General Information
Over 2 billion people around the world celebrate Easter. Many of those people celebrate with the fun tradition of the Easter Bunny! This magical rabbit delivers gifts to children in the form of chocolate eggs! This is all making me think, When, where, and why did this tradition originate? Well, after enjoying writing about the origins of Valentine’s Day, I’ll write about Easter!
The Origin of the Easter Bunny
Well, this is kind of a lame answer. No one knows the real origins of the bunny. With that said, we can make estimations of where it came from. I have taken a prominent theory of the bunny and oversimplified it: A long time ago, there was a non-religious Spring festival in Europe. The mascot of the festival was a rabbit! A little while later, the Germans brought the tradition of the bunny over to North America. The rabbit was connected to Easter celebrations because the festival and Easter were at the same time.
Different Bunnies Around the World
Special Easter traditions are celebrated in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Denmark, Norway, France, and way more.
- In countries like the UK, Canada, and the US, Easter is celebrated with a bunny.
- In Australia, Easter is celebrated with a Marsupial (an animal kind of like a Kangaroo).
- in Norway, Easter is celebrated with a baby chicken.
- Sweden and Finland have the Easter witch. Children dress up as witches and go knocking on doors asking for treats.
- In France, the bells of the church fly down to Rome to be blessed on Good Friday. They then collect candy on their way back to deliver to kids
As you can see, Easter is not just celebrated with bunnies! But you just might notice a secret: chocolate!
