The 2022 Winter Olympic Games have ended, and I had so much fun writing about them. However, the Paralympics are now in session! These games will take place from 4 March to 13 March. There are 6 official sports in the Winter Paralympic Games, but let’s focus on Wheelchair Curling (It’s my favourite!) Wheelchair Curling is just like Olympic curling, but it is played in a wheelchair. It was first added to the Paralympic Games in 2006.
- Wheelchair curling is more than curling on wheels. There are lots of different adaptations to the sport. Throwing of the rocks must be super precise because no sweeping of the ice is allowed!
- The player’s wheelchair can’t move when throwing a rock. This means that the thrower must use a long stick to grab the handle and throw the rock.
- Unlike Olympic curling, games are always played as a team event. Teams consist of 4 players: two male, two female.
Many Paralympic sports have lots of disability classification groups. Wheelchair Curling is quite simple, there is only one! Athletes can compete if they meet the general Paralympic requirements, and use a wheelchair.
That’s it! This game really has more behind its back than It seems! Want to stay caught up with Wheelchair curling during the Beijing 2022 Paralympic games? Try visiting the International Paralympic Committee website!
